First Investigative Journalist in Aetherwick – Linda Richey (25). Initially laughed at, now feared—her words have the power to move the masses. Even if many cannot read, once they hear what she has written, an avalanche can be unleashed. The powerful men of the city are beginning to respect her… and some want her dead.
Origins
Your mom was a British noble, and your father was an American politician. He was also an enlightened man, a professor at Harvard university, who always treated women as his equal. You are determined to prove to the whole world you deserve to have the same rights, same salaries, same everything as men. He educated you, and he send you to the schools.
Your maid was a woman from Aetherwick. She told you her life story. How she was in love with a local man, Logan Ahern, but she was courted by a Scott Hughie McMillian. He was shortly married to another woman but he annulled the marriage because he had learned she was not a virgin. Her parents saw him as a good prospect, and they sold her to him for a good money. She waited after their first night, and then she run to sleep with her love, Logan Ahern. But he had many mistresses, and she soon understood she is not important enough for him.
Hughie wasn’t mean per se, but he was too Christian, too strict, following Bible thoroughly, ordering her how to dress, how to behave… there was no way of disobeying him. She lived like in cage, under a despotic ruler. A daughter was born, but the marriage didn’t get better. And she couldn’t take it anymore. So she decided to run away. First, she came to Logan, asking him to stay with him. He refused. She ask him to take care of their daughter, but he refused any parentage. In all honesty, she herself didn’t have a clue which one of them is the father. Finally, she pleaded for money, and he gave her some for sleeping with him in the most dreadful way which left no hole unused.
She got some money, but it wasn’t enough, and she was worried she couldn’t take of the daughter properly. Fortunately, she stumbled upon a prostitute who took care of the daughter… and she run away to America.
Aetherwick
It was her stories of Aetherwick what led to your decision to make for yourself a name in the Great Britain, and because you had both citizenships, you moved there quite easily. With your family fortune, you started to publish a newspaper. Soon, you started to understand in what dreadful situation British women are, and you took it as your duty to bring them freedom.
Knitting class
You started a secret political movement, masked as a Knitting class. You gathered enlightened women who might be hungry for a change. As the first one, there was doctor Ruby Conrad. Born in Aetherwick, she went to study to America after her father was killed. She came back to help poor and to find who killed her father. But she is also eager to bring a justice to all women.
Then, there was Victory Scott, your youngest member, who lives under the tumb of a despotic father.
And Claudia Knight, a poor but strong women from the street.
British law
You studied British law and found a loophole. According the British law:
- Touching another man wife is illegal
- Wife has to follow her husband orders
- Women has to listen to her father, and later to her husband
- Women doesn’t have voting rights.
- Women can’t refuse her husband what he wishes.
- Men can do anything he wants with his wife/daughter as long as she survives.
- Women can’t divorce.
- Women have access only to basic education, and only under condition her father allows it.
Political plan
Moreover, women are getting much lower salaries then men, doing the same job. Thus, your political program is following. Woman should have:
- Right for divorce
- Right to say no
- Right for protection (stop of domestic violence)
- Right for voting
- Right to study
- Right to do the same job as man
- Right for equal pay
The loophole is: no one ever said women can’t do the same job as men. Mostly, they are simply not educated enough to do it, because they don’t have an access to an education. And even though women don’t have right to vote, no one ever said they cannot be elected. In the end, Britain has a female ruler even now.
Soon, and election will take place in Aetherwick; one seat in a government. Your plan is to get enough votes so one of you is elected. Preferably you, as there is no other obvious candidate.
Yet in the meantime, there is more things you need to attend to. Firstly, there is the dreadful social situation in the city. And secondly, there is a number of unsolved crimes.
Unsolved crimes
You ask yourself, how come so many terrible things could happen in the city. Families murdered in their homes. Street kids killed in streets. Other merchants competitors dying under suspicious circumstances. All Darts apart from Arthur Dart drowned in a boat accident. Alice Donaldson, found death floating in water, multiple raped. Father of Ruby Contray, killed behind the city gates. You suspect police to be corrupted, and you want to find the truth. You also would like to solve the crimes, if you are able, because that would make the best news.
You know there is a big crime scene in Aetherwick. Merrill Collins owns most of the city brothels. She might be the clue for finding a daughter of your maid. You would like to meet her. And than, there is Logan Ahern who is running illegal casinos. You should cover those stories. Plus, it is said they both might be running a drug smuggling business. This all would not be possible without a bigger corruption among the powerful of the city. Who is to be blamed?
Social situation
There is a factory owner Bradley Harringtons wants to start a fully automated process. You need to speak with some of his workers to see how they perceive a prospect of being redundant.
You have a good overview of powerful in the city, but you not necessarily know them personally.
Aristocrats
- There are Scotts. Sir Waverly is a war hero and veteran. His wife is called Isabela, daughter Victoria.
- Then, there are Clubbs, Early and Muriel.
Merchants
There are 3 big merchants and concurrent in the city:
- Bradley Harrington who should start soon a fully automatize factory.
- Arthur Dart, who recently inherited a family fortune.
- and Hughie McMillian, a husband of your maid.

There are 3 important names in the city:
- bishop Columbus Ede, who look way too well fed
- Elliot Gregory, who attends to poor
- and a Vatican ambassador who came to city recently, Silas David.
Criminals
You know there are two main organizations: one led by Logan Ahern, focused on hazard, second by Merrill Collins, focused on brothels.
Doctors
Apart from Ruby Conrad, there is also Bruno Turner.
Personal relationships
Ruby Conrad (doctor, 30)
You admire her cleverness, desire to help the poor, and inner strength with which she keeps carrying on even though she lacks resources. You heard she is dating one of the detectives. Maybe you could get to them through her.
Claudia Knight (22)
You know very little about her, but she is both young and strong, and great supporter. She could be your connection to poor and needy, maybe also to the criminal underworld.
Victora Scott (16)
She is young and naive, and strong willed, and eager to fly free. She reminds you a lot. She might be your connection to rich and powerful.

1. Make yourself a name
It’s not that you don’t believe in the ideals you proclaim — but the truth is, your main interest is yourself and your name: you want to get famous. You want to prove to the whole world how great you are. And you’ll do it by scoring a massive success here in Aetherwick — by uncovering corruption, solving crimes, and changing the political scene. Make a fuss — that’s what it’s all about. And you’re doing it through your newspapers, because the truth will set people free.

5. Promote feminism
Setting women free is something you truly care about — maybe even slightly more than your own fame.
