Paradise

Your parents were not rich, but they were orderly. Good Christians who did their best to bring bread to the table and dress you nicely and cleanly whenever you went to school or church. When you put on your old clothes, you were either helping around the household or playing with the neighborhood kids in the street.

Samuel

A new ministrant boy appeared in the church you attended every Sunday, and while the community gathered in the church garden after the ceremony, you got to know him and played with him a little. His name was Samuel Fidget. His eyes were like those of a haunted animal—big, wary, and scared. But when you approached him with kindness, just like a wounded creature, he started to purr, to cuddle with you, to play with affection. He didn’t talk much… but you heard him laugh. And it was the most precious sound in the world.

Beginning of Hell

For a few months, everything seemed alright—until that day at the river. You were eleven, and he might have been thirteen. He splashed you with water, and your white blouse got wet. He insisted you take it off to let it dry, and as you stood there, he said, “I’ll be your doctor now.”

You tried to stop him, but not forcefully enough. There was a strange glint in his eyes, and you were scared of what he might do. Fortunately, your father arrived at that moment. He saw Samuel lying over your half-naked body and became furious. He attacked him mercilessly, beating him nearly unconscious. You were too shocked to say a word. Your father dragged Samuel to the priest, demanding he be taken to the police—and the priest agreed.

Night visit

That night, Samuel came to your room. It was the middle of the night, and he was covered in blood, holding a knife. You woke from a nightmare and found yourself staring into his eyes. You didn’t speak. Neither did he. He raised the knife. “No,” you whimpered. He put it down, turned, and left.

You cried until you found the courage to go to your parents’ bedroom—only to find them both dead. You cried again, this time in complete shock. You went to your neighbors and, through tears, told them what had happened. They brought the police. You gave your testimony, and they placed you in a Christian asylum for a time until your aunt took you in. Meanwhile, you learned that Samuel had killed the priest as well. And that he was never found.

Eye of the Storm

You had started attending a new parish with the aunt —Father Elliot Gregory’s parish. You liked him. He was kind and preached about understanding and loving your enemy. So you took it to heart. You tried your best to love your enemy.

In that time, you befriended a girl with whom you were playing in the street. Her name was Claudia. You took her to the church with you. She was perplexed, but didn’t run away. You think she liked it.

Return of the devil

Your aunt had a son, Arthur Higginbottom, three years younger than you. You helped to raise him, sleeping in the same room.

For months, nightmares woke you. Then, one night, the nightmare became real. Samuel was there, again, with a knife. He placed it on Arthur’s neck. You stayed silent. Samuel lifted your skirt and finished what he had started such a long time ago. You didn’t tell your aunt a word. You were too afraid she couldn’t protect you. You ordered Arthur to keep quiet too—and he did.

Endless nightmare

Samuel kept coming. Unpredictably. Briefly. Sometimes, he didn’t touch you at all. Sometimes, he just curled up in your arms. You watched his knife, thinking about grabbing it, about stabbing him. But you never dared. And surprisingly, a strange care started to grow inside you—for this tortured, monstrous soul that was only partly human.

First love

There were older youths at the Gregory‘s parish as well. That’s where you met Arnold Shea and Mitchel Donaldson, best friends since childhood. One Sunday, Arnold approached you alone and invited you for a walk along the river. You said you’d have to ask your aunt, but you’d be delighted. Barely five minutes later, Mitchel came with the same proposal. You admitted Arnold had already asked. A little sadness crept into you—Mitchel was more handsome—but you had to keep your word. It wouldn’t have been right to date two men at once.

Encounter

Your aunt agreed, so you dressed nicely and met Arnold for a stroll by the river. Suddenly, Samuel appeared and drew his knife. You froze… and then, for the first time in your life, you screamed. Not for yourself—but to protect Arnold. He didn’t hesitate. He kicked the knife out of Samuel’s hand and took him down with one punch. Then two more, just to be sure, and he pulled you away. In a quiet park, you finally stopped. You cried. He held you. He kissed you. Your first kiss. In that moment, you told him everything about Samuel—except that he had raped you. You warned him to be careful. Samuel might return.

Relentless enemy

And he did. Arnold told you. Twice more, Samuel tried to kill him. Twice, Arnold defeated him. He promised that if Samuel came again, he’d kill him—no matter what his beliefs were. You think that’s the moment you truly fell in love with Arnold. Even though Mitchel was still around, and he looked like a wounded puppy whenever he saw you. But he became a good friend.

You learned about his own tragedy—his sister, Alice, had been raped and killed years ago. That’s why Mitchel swore to become a policeman—to find her killer and prevent such horrors from happening again.

Omnipresent

But Samuel never vanished. You felt his gaze on your neck. You felt his eyes undressing you in public. Even when you didn’t see more than a glimpse, you sensed his presence. Not always. But often. Regularly. And you were terrified.

New friend

It was a cruel faith, then even though you had a stalker, he wasn’t present when he was necessary. As you were coming home a bit later then you should, a drunk man tried to drag you to the small street and rape you. Fortunately, Liam Conolly appeared, and beaten the man. Turns out he was a policemen. He offered to walk you home, but you refused. You didn’t want Arnold to learn about what happened from your aunt. You grew to be very secretive about your life. But since then, you started to see Liam in the streets, and you have became friends with him.  He was always treating you very gallantly, like an older brother.

Marriage

When you were seventeen, Arnold proposed. You married in front of God, Father Gregory… and Samuel. You felt him there, in the crowd. On your wedding night, you inserted in you a piece of blood-soaked veil to persuade Arnold you were still a virgin. It worked, and he was satisfied.

But when you learned you were pregnant, you found the courage to do something mad. You arranged with the priest to make an announcement, telling the parish your baby would need a godfather—and that a good one should meet you the next day, at the place of the wet blouse. That’s how you returned to the place where your nightmare began. Arnold was with you.

And Samuel came.

Godfather

“Samuel,” you said. “I’m going to have a baby.”

He nodded.

“It’s going to need a godfather.”

He shrugged.

“I want it to be you.”

He froze. Stayed frozen for a long time. Then, slowly, he nodded.

“I’m so glad,” you said, though inside you were a quivering bundle of nerves. You ran to him and hugged him. He hugged you back—confused—and then he left. And you knew that if there was any chance to keep your family safe, this was it.

Life hardships

When your daughter Rose was born, Samuel came to the church and stood as her godfather. Ever since, he’s visited from time to time, bringing gifts for Rose and for you. He hasn’t crossed the line again. But you know he’s still a murderer. And yet… Christ taught you to love, so you try to love him, as best you can.

But times are hard. Arnold works long hours in the factory but barely earns enough to keep you fed—and even less for himself. His employer, Bradley Harrington, is threatening to automate the factory, which would mean Arnold—and many others—would lose their jobs. Arnold speaks of organizing a workers’ uprising, but you fear it would only lead to bloodshed.

Meanwhile, you need to eat. Rose needs to eat. And as if it would no be enough, Rose fell badly sick. You need to give her medicine, otherwise her conditions is getting worse, but medicine costs money.

Ruby

You are going with her to the Ruby Conray, a women doctor who lives in the neighborhood.  Originally, you took her to the other doctor, Bruno Turner, but he sent you away because you couldn’t pay. Told you to go to Ruby. He probably doesn’t even remember. That’s how little you mattered to him. So you went to Ruby, and she took care of your Rose, even though you couldn’t pay. Ruby is friendly, so you are friendly with her as well. But you didn’t tell to Arnold you are taking your daughter to a female doctor. You are sure he would oppose to it.

Desperate ways out

But you still don’t have money, and you can’t be misusing Ruby’s generosity forever. You’re considering going to the local crime lord, Merrill Collins, and working for her as a prostitute. You wonder if you should tell Arnold. You’re sure he’d oppose it. But what choice do you have? You could ask your friends for help, but they are poor too. They can’t feed themsleves, let alone your whole family—not for long. And Arnold’s pride wouldn’t allow it anyway.

At the same time, Arthur came to you. He asked if you would hide him if he had to run away. You said yes—but demanded to know why. He told you he wanted to run away with Victoria Scott, a lord’s daughter. You scolded him, called him mad—but he stood firm. Maybe though, you thought, this could also be a way out. Could Victoria help your family financially?

And then there’s Samuel again. You know he works for Logan Ahern now—another crime lord. Maybe he could help you get money?

One way or another, you need to act.

Samuel Fidget (22)
The source of your misfortune—the man from whom the living nightmare began. You are terrified of him to your very core… and yet, you pity him, and try to show him kindness. He is also the godfather of your daughter, Rose.

Arthur Higginbottom (17)
Your cousin, though he feels more like a younger brother. You raised him. You share a deep bond built on fear, survival, and silence. He works for Lord Scott and recently confided in you his desire to run away with Victoria Scott, the lord’s daughter.

Elliot Gregory (Priest, 35)
A kind and compassionate man you often go to for advice, confession, and support. You admire him greatly. He preaches love and forgiveness, which helped shape your efforts to show kindness even to your enemy. However, you’ve never told him what Samuel did to you. You suspect Samuel confesses to him as well. But your conscious is heavy and you want to share.

Arnold Shea (25)
Your husband. Hardworking, loving, and faithful—a true Christian trying to do right by his family despite a cruel and unforgiving world. He’s been your protector, your first love, and the father of your child. But now he might lose his job, and you’re all starving. And he is both proud, and deeply Christian.

Mitchel Donaldson (detective, 25)
Your husband’s best friend. Handsome, loyal, and gentle. If he had asked you out first, your life may have taken another path. You share a quiet emotional bond. He has his own pain: the loss of his sister Alice, who was raped and murdered. He became a policeman to bring justice to others… and perhaps one day, to her.

Liam Conolly (detective, 30)
He saved you from being raped (about which you didn’t tell to anybody), and you are friends ever since. You perceive him as an older brother you never had, and you find him attractive as well.

Ruby Conray (Doctor, 30)
A generous, accomplished woman who treats you and Rose essentially for free. You admire her greatly—she’s a doctor with an American degree, something nearly unreachable for someone of your background. But you also feel the vast distance between your lives. She came from privilege. You did not.

Victoria Scott (16)
The daughter of Lord Scott. Beautiful and high-born, yet perhaps willing to break the rules for love. Arthur wants to run away with her, which you find both reckless and oddly hopeful. She could represent either disaster—or a lifeline.

Bradley Harrington (merchant, 42)
Arnold’s employer. A wealthy merchant who is threatening to automate the factory, potentially leaving dozens of men—including Arnold—without work. His decision could ruin your family’s survival.

Logan Ahern (Crime Lord, 42)
A local crime boss and Samuel’s current employer. Ruthless and dangerous. He may be another potential source of income—or threat.

Merrill Collins (Crime Lord, 42)
A local underworld figure you’re considering working for as a prostitute out of desperation. You haven’t told Arnold yet. You’re not sure you ever will.

Claudia (22)
A childhood friend who is going to church with you.

Dr. Bruno Turner (Doctor, 40)
The first doctor you turned to when you needed help. He turned you away without a second thought because you had no money. He likely doesn’t even remember you.

1. Samuel Fidget raped you when you were young.

  • Knows: you, Samuel Fidget, Arthur Higginbottom
  • Shouldn’t Find Out: Arnold Shea, the community (they might reject you and shame you)

2. Arthur Higginbottom wants to run away with Victoria Scott.

  • Knows: You, Arthur
  • Shouldn’t Find Out: Lord Scott, the police, and anyone loyal to the upper class. It would ruin Arthur’s life—or worse.

3. You still have a crush on Mitchel Donaldson, your husband’s best friend.

  • Knows: Only you.
  • Shouldn’t Find Out: Arnold (your husband), Mitchel himself, or anyone in your church community. You are deeply ashamed, especially because Arnold is so good to you.

4. You are considering becoming a prostitute to feed your family.

  • Knows: Only you
  • Shouldn’t Find Out: well, difficult to say… but your parish woudl reject you.

6. You feel responsible for your parents’ deaths, even though it wasn’t your fault.

  • Knows: You
  • Shouldn’t Find Out: Arnold, or Father Gregory—you fear they’d either pity you too much or start to see you as broken.

7. You suspect Samuel may be the one who raped and murdered Mitchel’s sister Alice.

  • Knows: Only you, as a growing suspicion
  • Shouldn’t Find Out: Mitchel. He would hunt Samuel down and likely die doing it. Father Gregory shouldn’t know unless you’re sure.

8. You faked virginity on your wedding night

  • Knows: only you, but Samuel and Arnold knows you weren’t a virgin
  • Shouldn’t Find Out: Arnold, and the Christian community.

1. Take care of your family
As a mother, your main task is to protect your daughter. And your husband is right on the second place. Sometimes you wonder how far you are willing to go for them… and you fear you would stop at nothing.

2. Save Samuel Fidget
Somewhere, deep inside, you still believe Samuel’s soul might be saved. If he truly repented—if he turned to God—maybe he could even become a priest. Maybe that would redeem the horror he brought upon you. Maybe that would make your pain worth something.

3. Keep your marriage intact
Arnold is a good man. He loves you, works for you, suffers for you. And you love him. You must not let your secrets—or your feelings for Mitchel—ruin what little happiness you’ve found.

4. Cure Rose of her illness
Your kid is badly sick. Ruby Conray manages to treat her with medicine, but the girl is not getting better. You could try to go to doctor Bruno Turner, but until you have money, you know he won’t take you.  Are there any other ways to help your daughter?

5. Find a source of income
You’re desperate for money. Your husband may soon lose his job, and there’s barely enough to eat already. Whether through honest work or not, you need to find a way to support your family.

6. Protect Arthur Higginbottom
Arthur is like a younger brother to you, and you helped raise him. Now he’s caught in a foolish, dangerous love affair with the daughter of a noble. You want to keep him safe—even if it means protecting him from himself.

7. Prevent Arnold from going too far
Arnold is talking about organizing a workers’ uprising. You’re afraid it will only lead to bloodshed and his death. You don’t want to loose him.

8. Make peace with your faith
You go to church. You pray. You try to be a good Christian. But after all that’s happened, you struggle to believe. One of your deepest desires is to restore your relationship with God… and to believe He still loves you.

9. Repay Doctor Ruby Conray
Ruby treated you when no one else would. You admire her, and part of you wants to become strong and independent—like her. You want to find a way to repay her kindness, even if it takes years.

10. Keep Mitchel close—but at a distance
Mitchel still stirs something in you. He could have been the love of your life, in another world. You want to keep him as a friend—but never let him know how you feel. It’s dangerous… for everyone involved.

11. Make sure Samuel never hurts anyone again
If redemption fails, there’s another option. You’ve thought about it more than once. If Samuel comes again with a knife… maybe this time, you’ll be ready. Maybe this time, you will be the one to end it.
