Arnold Shea is a man everyone knows—at least among the poor. When a knife is drawn in a brawl, he’s the one who steps in and calms the situation before blood is spilled. A good father to his family and a father figure to the community, he’s widely respected. His little daughter is only two years old, and everyone adores him. Despite the hardships of his life, he always carries a smile on his face.

Lancelot

Sometimes you wonder how you ended up the way you are. Maybe it was because of your best friend, Mitchell Donaldson, who had always been protective since childhood. Protective of his younger sister, protective of the weak, always standing up to bullies. So, you simply stood by his side. You nicknamed him Lancelot, and he nicknamed you My King. The truth is, he wouldn’t have won so many fights if it weren’t for you. Somehow, you always knew how to fight—maybe because you had so many older brothers. You grew strong. And together, you made sure no one got hurt around you.

But that still didn’t prevent Donaldson’s little sister Alice from disappearing. She was found a week later, drowned in the river—raped multiple times. Something broke in Mitchell that day, and he swore to find those responsible. He set his mind on becoming a policeman, and a few years later, he succeeded.

Young Love

Your path was different. Like the rest of your family, you worked in a factory from a young age. You tried your best to be peaceful and hardworking. On Sundays, you went to church to hear Father Elliot Gregory sermon. You were meeting Michael there regularly. It was him who pointed out a girl in the front row. You approached her after mass and asked her out. After checking with her aunt, she said yes.

The Maniac

Her name was Grace. One day, while walking along the river, a man suddenly approached with a naked knife and tried to gut you. But you were too much of a fighter for that. You kicked the knife from his hand, knocked him out with one punch, and made sure he stayed down with a few more. Then you looked at Grace. She was terrified, so you dragged her away.

Only once you were safely far from the scene did you stop, hug her, and kiss her—without even knowing why. She started to cry. She said the man’s name was Samuel Fidget.
“He’s only half-human,” she said. “Half-animal. He killed my parents—because my father hit him. He’s very protective of me… and vengeful. He’ll kill you.”

“Let him try,” you murmured.

And he did. That same night, he broke into your home. But you woke up in time and beat him half to death before he fled. “I should kill you,” you said. “But a Christian doesn’t kill. Try it again, or come near Grace, and it’ll be the last thing you ever do.”

Later, he tried again. This time, you actually thought you finished him, but somehow, he survived.

The Wedding

Some time later, when Grace was 17, you asked her to marry you. It was a happy wedding. Father Gregory officiated, Mitchell was your best man, and even though Grace was nervous, it was the happiest day of your life. On your wedding night, she was in pain during sex, and the blood on the sheets proved her virginity. You had a proper wife—and were a proper man to her.

The Godfather

Later, Grace became pregnant—and deeply worried. Then she told you her plan: she wanted Samuel Fidget to be the godfather. “Why?” you asked.

“Because it’s the safest way to keep him from harming us,” she said. “I can’t think of a better protection… except you.”

“Or Mitchell,” you added.

“Not even him.”

You reluctantly agreed.

At church, Grace stood before the parish and announced that her baby would need a godfather. “A good one should meet us tomorrow at noon, at the Place of the Wet Shirt.”

The next day, you waited where Grace said. Samuel appeared. You watched him resentfully, but he barely acknowledged you.

“Samuel,” Grace said, “I’m going to have a baby.”

He nodded.

“It’s going to need a godfather.”

He shrugged.

“I’d like it to be you.”

He froze. For a long time. Then, he nodded slightly.

Rose

When your daughter Rose was born, he came to the church and stood as godfather. Since then, he visits occasionally, bringing gifts for her and the baby. He’s never done anything wrong again. But you know who he really is—even if you haven’t told Grace. He’s the right hand of Logan Ahern, the crime lord. The most feared killer in Aetherwick. And you wonder: shouldn’t he hang?

Also, you suspect there’s more to the story than Grace has told. You’ve decided to speak with Arthur Higginbottom, Grace’s cousin—who’s like a brother to her. Maybe he knows the whole truth.

Weird friends

Grace was always secretive, keeping her things to herself, but you know she made quite a number of friends in the past, one more peculiar than another.

  • Somehow, she became a great friend with a detective Neil Johnson
  • From childhood, she was a friend with Claudia Knight, a right hand of a criminal Merrill Collins. Claudia even came to you once, offering you a well paid job, but you refused: you will not tarnish your soul by working for a criminal. Sin is a sin.
  • You heard her talking about Ruby Conray even though you are not fully sure who she is.

Robots

You work at the factory of Bradley Harrington. Word is, he plans to fully automate it soon. Machines will replace the workers. That would be a disaster. Even now, you struggle to feed your family. You often go hungry just so they can eat.

That’s not right. A simple man deserves protection. No unholy machine should take away the honest labor of a good man! You and the other workers are planning a meeting to decide what to do. But options are few.

  • There’s an election coming—someone might finally represent your interests. But it’ll be held after the machines arrive. By then, you’ll be jobless. Starving. And any new policies will take months or years to enact. You might not make it that long.
  • So maybe… sabotage the machines? But how?
  • Or lead a demonstration. Hope the mayor of Aetherwick notices.
  • Or—God forbid—assassinate Bradley Harrington himself? Are you really considering murder? That would damn your soul. And if you were caught, your family would be doomed anyway.

Support

You need allies. Desperately. But who?

  • Arthur Higginbottom works for the Scotts—maybe you could ask for help from the Lord, Lady, or their daughter.

  • Harrington has competitors: Dart and McMillian. Maybe they’d offer jobs—but this isn’t just about you. Hundreds will be unemployed. Could they help put pressure on Harrington?

  • Father Gregory might help. He cares about his people.

  • If you’re desperate enough… you could even turn to Logan Ahern or Merrill Collins. Crime lords. Dangerous people—but maybe willing to help.

  • There’s also Linda Ritchey, a journalist. If she told your story, it might draw attention.

  • Or perhaps Mitchell could offer protection? He’s a cop. He knows this isn’t right. The working class is being crushed. But if you will go against the law, will he stand on your side, or against you?

But how can you do all this and still earn enough to feed your family? How can you protest, organize, or fight—while paying your taxes to avoid debtor’s prison?

Sickness

To make it even worse, your daughter Rose is malnourished and sick. Your wife is still managing to arrange a proper health care for her, but for how long? You have almost no money, and you will need much more.

Grace Shea (20)
Your wife, the love of your life, and the mother of your daughter, Rose. She has been a good and faithful wife before the eyes of God, and you honor her. You need to protect her. You would do anything for her… maybe even kill.

Samuel Fidget (22)
A monster in human skin—you’re not even sure he is fully human. You wonder if it would even be a sin to kill him. But… he is also the godfather of your child. And so far, he’s kept his word. For now.

Arthur Higginbottom (17)
Grace’s cousin—like a brother to her. You trust him enough to seek the truth about her past. He works in the household of Lord Scott.

Elliot Gregory (priest, 35)
The priest and head of your parish. A kind, godly man who genuinely cares for his community. You’ve listened to his sermons for years, and he married you and Grace. You may be able to turn to him for advice or help in your hour of need.

Mitchell Donaldson (detective, 25)
Your best friend since childhood. You used to call him Lancelot because he always protected the weak and stood up to bullies. He’s like a brother to you, and you would die for him. He is now a policeman, trying to make the city safer—perhaps at great personal cost.

Claudia Knight (22)
Grace’s friend, a right hand of criminal boss Merrill Collins. She offered you a job some time ago, but you refused.

You also know about…

Bradley Harrington (42)
Your employer—the owner of the factory where you work. He plans to replace the workers with machines. If he does, your family and many others will starve. You may need to act before it’s too late.

Arthur Dart (30)
A competitor of Harrington. Might be a possible ally—or at least a pressure point—in the fight to preserve workers’ rights.

Hughie McMillian (55)
Another of Harrington’s competitors. He is known to be ill, and someone you might want to learn more about—whether for work, strategy, or other reasons.

Logan Ahern (40)
A feared crime lord in Aetherwick. You know that Samuel Fidget is his right-hand man. You suspect Logan has committed many murders. You’re not sure if he might be an enemy… or a desperate ally.

Merrill Collins (40)
Another crime lord, and rival to Ahern. Dangerous, unpredictable, but possibly useful—if you dare approach him.

Linda Ritchey (25)
A journalist. You’ve heard she’s willing to publish stories that matter. If she told your story, maybe someone in power would listen. She might be your best hope to draw attention to the plight of workers like you.

Neil Johnson (detective, 30)
A friend of Grace.

Ruby Conray (30)
A friend of Grace.

Scotts family
Arthur is working for them, so you know there is sir Waverly, his wife Isabel, and daughter Victoria.

Doesn’t have any

1. Protect Your Family at All Costs
You have a wife and child to care for. You must ensure they’re safe, fed, and never at the mercy of Samuel Fidget, factory closures, or the crime lords.

2. Be a good Christian
You have been raised in Christ, you follow it thoroughly. You know that both men and women have their place, and that’s how it is right.

3. Help to your best friend
You know your best friend Mitchell Donaldson is still searching for the murderer of his sister. As much as you can, you will want to help him.

4. Discover the Full Truth About Grace and Samuel
You strongly suspect Grace has not told you everything. What is her past with Samuel Fidget? What is she hiding? Find out the truth—no matter what it is.

5. Speak to Arthur Higginbottom
He’s the one person who might know more about Grace’s history and motivations. You need to speak with him and discover the truth—especially before something worse happens.

6. Bring Samuel Fidget to Justice
You believe Samuel is dangerous and unhinged. Whether through the law or your own hands, you want to stop him. But he’s your daughter’s godfather—how far are you willing to go?

7. Stop the Factory Automation
If Bradley Harrington replaces you with machines, your family and hundreds of others will starve. Stop the automation—by organizing workers, finding allies, or more drastic means.

8. Fight for Workers’ Rights
You’re emerging as a voice for the working class. Can you lead your fellow laborers, find political support, or start a movement before it’s too late?

9. Wrestle With the Idea of Assassination
You’re desperate enough to consider murdering Harrington. Explore whether this is a path you could truly take—or seek out a better way before crossing that dark line.

10. Find a Political Candidate Who Will Help You
With elections approaching, find someone who will protect the common man and oppose the machine revolution. Can you gain their support—or even push them to act faster?

11. Seek Powerful Allies
You may need help from dangerous places. Could Logan Ahern, Merrill Collins, Arthur Dart, Hughie McMillian, Scotts, or even Linda Ritchey (the journalist) help you protect your job, your family, or your community?

12. Convince Grace to cut ties with Samuel forever
You love your wife dearly, but you cannot live under the shadow of Samuel Fidget any longer. He is a danger to your family, and while you understand Grace believes keeping him close offers some protection, you know better. You must find a way to open her eyes to the threat he truly is and convince her, gently or firmly, that this man has no place in your lives. You won’t let your daughter grow up with a monster lingering at the door.

13. Ensure your daughter Rose grows up in a safe world
Everything you do, you do for Rose. The world is cruel, and you’ve seen what it does to girls left unprotected. You’ll not let that happen to your daughter. Whether it’s work, the factory, crime lords, or Samuel himself—you will face whatever you must to make sure Rose is safe, fed, and surrounded by people who love her. And if anyone threatens that, you will deal with them. Quietly or not.
