Mitchell Donaldson (25) recently became an inspector. He is young, strong, and determined to change the city for the better. Someone has to protect the weak from the wolves.

Lancelot’s Dead Sister

Since childhood, your mother told you stories of Lancelot, the noble knight of King Arthur — a man who fought the strong and shielded the weak. She raised you with that code in your blood. You believed in it. You believed in yourself. You and your best pal Arnold Shea has been ready to protect anybody. He called you Lancelot, and you called him My King.

Until your sister disappeared. She was only seven. A week later, the police found her dead. She was floating in a river. Multiple raped before her death.

Your heart shattered. But your resolve didn’t. You swore you’d find her murderer. That you’d become the kind of man who could have saved her. At seventeen, you joined the city police. By twenty-five, you made detective. All fueled by grief and a promise made at a child’s grave.

Chief of Police

Your captain, Neil Johnson (45), is known as a decent man. But you remember — he led the investigation into Alice’s disappearance. And he failed. You’ve watched him ever since.

He’s rich. Too rich for a man on a public servant’s salary. He’s got connections — the kind that walk in shadows. Politicians, lords, merchants… they all visit him like pilgrims to a shrine. And just recently, he bought a villa in Spain and sent his wife and daughter there. Why? What’s he hiding?

You’re sure he knows more about your sister’s case than he ever said. And you’re going to find out.

He’s been visiting Sir Early Clubb (33) regularly, almost every Thursday. Why? What happens behind that posh door?

Partner in Crime (and Law)

Your partner is Liam Conolly (30). He’s reckless, trigger-happy, and more brawn than brain. He gets results, sure. But he cuts every corner, breaks every rule. You’ve got each other’s backs — even when you’re grinding your teeth in frustration. It’s not a friendship. It’s a working truce. You have to often remind him the “presumption of innocence” principle.

Lover

There’s a girl. Calls herself Clau. Stunning, sharp, wild. You might be falling in love. You hope she’s just what she says she is — but something in your gut tells you there’s more to her than meets the eye.

Crime Bosses

Two wolves run Aetherwick’s streets:

  • Merill Collins (42) runs illegal prostitution and the drug trade. She’s ruthless. Controlled. Dangerous.

  • Logan Ahern (42) deals in underground gambling. His right-hand man is Samuel Fidget (22) — a man who doesn’t talk much, but often plays with his knife. He is also a godfather to the daughter of your best friend.

The Poor

You were raised in the gutters, and you never forgot. You’re still close with Elliot Gregory (35), a local priest who gives what little he has to the starving and the sick.

Then there’s Arnold Shea (25) — your childhood friend. You were best man at his wedding to Grace Shea (20). You’ve been in love with her since the day you met her. She chose him. You respected that. You pointed her to Arnold, but Arnold asked her out a few minutes faster then you.

They’ve got a two-year-old daughter now. But Arnold’s job at Bradley Harrington’s factory is hanging by a thread. The man plans to replace every worker with machines. When that happens, your friend — and half the city — will starve.

The Young One

You used to be a hero to Arthur Higginbottom (17). He’s just a potboy now, working at Sir Waverly Scott’s estate. Still, he looks up to you. You’re not sure you deserve it anymore.

The Healers

Being a cop in Aetherwick means bleeding often.

Dr. Bruno Turner (40) patches you up. He’s arrogant, cold, but he’s the best — and government pays his bills, so he plays nice. With the poor, not so much. He turns them away like rats.

Then there’s Dr. Ruby Conray (30). She’s new, young, and a woman — and that’s enough to scare most men away. But not you. Her father was killed, and justice never came.
Maybe she’s walking the same path as you — fighting against a system built to fail the innocent. Even though she is a woman, she is doing her best to heal others, even though she is going almost broke because of it. You feel in your heart you are a bit worried to entrust your life to a woman, but you are doing all in your might to get over your prejudice, which you are well aware you have. You also couldn’t miss the way she and your partner are looking at each other.

Neil Johnson (chief of police, 45)
He seems like a decent, loving, caring man… but he’s too rich for a policeman, and you suspect foul play. You’re genuinely confused by him. He was also the officer investigating your sister’s disappearance back then. He failed. You never forgot that.

Liam Conolly (detective, 30)
Your partner. Tough as nails. You admire his resolve, but not his methods — too violent, too careless. He acts more like a blunt weapon than a protector of the people. You wish he cared more for the simple folk. The way he is now, he often comes off as a bully. Still, you’ve got each other’s backs.

Merrill Collins (crime-lord, 42)
She controls the city’s prostitution and has her hands deep in the drug trade. Ruthless, clever, and always two steps ahead. You’ve never faced her directly — not yet.

Clau (22)
A girl you’re seeing. Beautiful. Mysterious. You’ve only met her a few times, but she has you wrapped around her finger. You don’t know much about her past, and that bothers you — but not enough to stay away. Something about her feels dangerous.

Logan Ahern (crime lord, 42)
Runs the illegal gambling scene. Also involved in drugs. A major power in the underworld. You’ve never arrested him — no evidence, no leverage. Just whispers and fear.

Samuel Fidget (22)
Logan Ahern’s right-hand man. Dangerous, and scary. But he is also a godfather to the daughter of your best friend Arnold Shea. Honestly, you were a bit hurt you weren’t chosen as a godfather, and you wish to ask Arnold about it.

Elliot Gregory (35)
Local priest. A kind man with a good heart. One of the few people who still believes in doing the right thing without expecting anything in return. You go to him sometimes when the darkness gets too loud.

Arnold Shea (25)
Your best friend. You used to call him My King. Honest. Charismatic. A hard worker doing his best to provide for his family. He works in one of Harrington’s factories and worries daily about being replaced by machines. He is very close to losing everything.

Grace Shea (20)
Arnold’s wife. Your Guinevere. The one you’ve loved since the moment you met her. But Arnold got to her first, and you’d never betray him. Not for anything. You keep your feelings buried deep.

Arthur Higginbottom (17)
A poor kid from your neighborhood. He used to look up to you like a hero. Now he works as a potboy at Sir Waverly Scott’s estate. You wonder if he still believes in you.

1. You are still in love with Grace Shea, his best friend’s wife.
You were Arnold’s best man. You love him like a brother. But that doesn’t change the way your heart aches every time you see Grace. You’ve never acted on it — never would — but it eats you up.

  • Knows: No one.
  • Shouldn’t find out: Arnold Shea, Grace Shea.

2. You have violent thoughts you doesn’t act on.
Sometimes, you dream about what you’d do if you ever found Alice’s killer. And it’s not justice you picture — it’s revenge. You’re afraid of the darkness growing inside you.

  • Knows: No one.
  • Shouldn’t find out: anyone who sees you as a law abiding man who is always doing what is right

3. You doubt yourself.
You act like the city’s savior, the knight in shining armor — but some days, you don’t believe it yourself. You’re scared you’re just another broken man in a city built on rot.

  • Knows: Only you.
  • Shouldn’t find out: Arthur Higginbottom. He still believes you’re a hero.

1. Find out the murderer of your sister
You made a vow on her grave, and you’re not breaking it. Someone in this rotten city knows something. The crime lords, their henchmen, maybe even the chief himself. And Ruby Conray… she lost someone too. Maybe she can help you uncover the truth. Maybe she understands the fire that’s burning in your chest.

2. Discover if the chief of police is corrupted
He’s good on the surface — gentle, respected — but he’s too clean, too rich. A man on a cop’s salary doesn’t buy a villa in Spain. If he’s part of the filth you’re fighting, you’ll bring him down.

3. Help your friends while abiding the law

Arnold’s your brother in all but blood. He’s working himself to death, and still struggling to feed his wife and child. If the machines come, he’ll be out of a job. And then what? You want to protect him, even if it means standing up to the likes of Bradley Harrington. But you are also a man of law and you have to keep it. You won’t break what you are obliged to protect.

4. Ask Clau for marriage
You think it’s love. She’s the only one who makes the pain fade, even for a moment. You’re old enough to build a family — something solid, something pure.

5. Stay clean in a dirty world
Every day, the line gets blurrier. Liam’s doing things the rough way. The Chief might be dirty. The city’s built on lies. You still believe in doing things by the book — because if you cross that line, what makes you different from the rest?

6. Protect the innocent
You grew up poor. You know what it’s like to have nothing. That’s why you still walk the back alleys. That’s why you listen to street kids. That’s why you haven’t given up on the simple folk. They’re the soul of the city, and someone needs to look after them.

7. Find out what is going on in Aetherwick
There’s something rotten festering in the Aetherwick. Rich people dying points at merchants and their dirty practices. Crimes unsolved hints at corruption and influences from high places. You need to get to the core of it all.
