Liam Conolly (30) is an an experienced inspector. Years at force have changed him. He’s become grumpy and ruthless. But he knows how to navigate it. He understands that there’s no clear right or wrong, but still, he does what he can to be helpful.
Rough beginnings
As a kid, you were a scoundrel. Thieving. Lying. Life was hard for a street urchin with no parents. In the age of 10, you were part of a street gang of Logan Ahern who was making his name in the street in that time, and you were quickly raising in rank, because you had a fire in your heart no one could quench. Â
In the age of fifteen, you were almost Logan’s right hand. There was a prostitute in that time who you loved dearly and wanted to fuck – Merrill Collins. But when you came to her with money, she only laughed at you, sending you back to your mother and coming back when you grow some balls. Your young ego couldn’t take it, and you boasted you will do anything for you. She said she needs something – a small girl. You knew about one girl who was playing in the streets around, so you grab your friends, and brough her to Merrill, and was rewarded with a fuck which – as you felt – truly made you a man. You didn’t know what she needed that little girl for. You didn’t event know her name. That you learned only a week later, when she was found dead – raped, multiple times, floating in water. Her name was Alice Donaldson.Â
Something broke in you that day. You were no stranger to pain and suffering, but knowing you doomed a life of someone so young…Â
Change
You went to the church and found a young priest, to whom you confessed everything that had happened. “There’s no way I can atone for it,” you said.
“No,” he replied. “But you can do your best to right the wrongs in others.” His name was Elliot Gregory, and his words pushed you to become a policeman.
Police Years
It was a long journey from criminal to policeman, but four years ago, you finally became a detective. However, you grew even more bitter than ever before. Soon, you understood that justice isn’t about righting wrongs. You saw the miserable deeds desperate people are capable of… and realized there is no god, no higher justice—just a bunch of miserable people trying to do their best. In your own way, you try to do the same, but you feel the weight of how often you fail. You still go to Elliot Gregory for guidance—not because you seek forgiveness, but because it helps to talk with someone about everything you see.
Chief and Colleague
The chief of police, Neil Johnson (45), is a decent man. You’re pretty sure he’s corrupt, as he’s far too rich and has far too many good connections with the nobility, but you don’t blame him. If he didn’t let the rich get away with their deeds, he wouldn’t stay in his position for long. Personally, you’ve never seen him do anything truly bad. As much as he can, he tries to help (at least, that’s your estimation)—just like you. Sometimes, you piss him off with your “shoot first, ask later” attitude, but you’ve learned it’s the most effective way to get answers and keep your life intact.
You also have a new colleague: Mitchel Donaldson (25), the brother of little Alice Donaldson. You’re both tormented by guilt, and hardened enough to carry it. You try to teach the young buck how to do his job without getting himself killed, but he’s not very perceptive. He constantly babbles about “the presumption of innocence” and similar nonsense you couldn’t care less about. As far as you’re concerned, nobody is innocent. You’d take some satisfaction in finding a flaw in that annoying “knight on the white horse.” At the same time, you do your best to protect him. It’s as if you feel some obligation. You took his sister’s life, so now you need to protect his. No matter the cost.
A Young Love
Recently, your path crossed with an interesting woman: Ruby Conray (30). She’s your age, the daughter of a doctor who was killed many years ago. Ruby went to the USA to study to become a doctor, and after finishing her studies, she returned here to practice. She’s loving and caring, helping the poor as much as she can, even though she’s almost broke herself. She took care of you once when you were hurt, you flirted with her, and soon you were dating.
Second Doctor
Until now, you were treated by Dr. Bruno Turner (40), an arrogant and expensive man. Since your care is paid by the government, he always provided a good service. However, this rigid man has no scruples, and he will kick anyone out of his office who can’t pay.
Crime Bosses
There are two main players in Aetherwick:
Merrill Collins (42), your childhood love, has made a name for herself, taken over the prostitution business, and is also trying to smuggle drugs. Her right-hand woman is Claudia Knights (22). As far as you know, Merrill has been looking after Claudia since she was young, but is not her mother.
Then there is Logan Ahern (42), who dominates the city’s underworld, and his right-hand man, Samuel Fidget (22), a real killer-machine.Â
You have a very explosive relationship with both of them. You’ve interrupted their businesses many times, but you’ve never managed to take them down. They both respect you, hate you, play with you, and sometimes it feels like they are both your best friends and your enemies. Somehow, their existence gives your life meaning. What would you be if you weren’t fighting them? What would you be for in this world if you weren’t fighting crime? Maybe you should get married, but since you didn’t have a family yourself, it’s hard for you to imagine becoming a father.
The Only Friend
Your only true friend seems to be Grace Shea (20), a woman you saved when she was young from being raped. She was too young for you, so no sexual relationship ever developed between you, but somehow you became friends. You were very happy when she married Arnold Shea (25), a hard-working man from the community. Arnold has a good voice, and people listen to him. He’s also law-abiding and does his best to make everything work.
Logan Ahern (crime boss, 42)
A stern man with a nasty sense of humor. You’ve seen what he’s capable of—killing comes as naturally to him as breathing. But ever since he rose to power, he’s been extremely careful not to get caught doing anything illegal.
Merrill Collins (crime boss, 42)
Impressive, yet terrifying. You’ll never forget that one night with her. But you also can’t forgive her for what she did to that little girl, Alice Donaldson… or for the role you played in her death.
Elliot Gregory (priest, 35)
A good man who does his best to help the community. You come to him often to confess, though you never say the prayers he asks you to. That’s fine. You know he’s praying for you.
Neil Johnson (chief of police, 45)
A decent man. Probably corrupt, and you make his life a living hell sometimes, but you’ve never seen him do anything truly vile.
Mitchel Donaldson (detective, 25)
Your partner—and a bloody knight on a white horse. He believes in the law above all, thinks all women are innocent and in need of protection, and you’re constantly worried he’ll get you both killed. Still, you’ll do everything you can to keep him alive… even if it means your own neck ends up on the guillotine.
Ruby Conray (doctor, 30)
You might actually love her. Should you propose? Maybe. If you can picture yourself as a husband. Maybe even a father.
Bruno Turner (doctor, 40)
An arrogant prick—but annoyingly, he’s earned the right to be. He’s good at what he does. Still, you wouldn’t mind seeing him taken down a peg.
Samuel Fidget (22)
Logan Ahern’s right hand—and you’re afraid he might be even worse than his boss. He’s the one doing most of the killing these days, and that much you know for sure.
Claudia Knights (22)
Merrill Collins’s right hand. You used to like that kid. She’s trying hard to be a good daughter to her adoptive mother. Sometimes you wonder if there’s still hope for her. There was hope for you, wasn’t there?
Grace Shea (20)
A good friend to you. You want to help her however you can. She’s your only real friend. She has a two-year-old daughter now.
Arnold Shea (25)
A good, hard-working man, and the unofficial leader of Aetherwick’s poor community. A voice people listen to—and a man trying to make things work, despite everything.
Â
1. You kidnapped Alice Donaldson.
This is the original sin that defines your guilt. It’s the reason you became a cop. If it comes to light, it could end your life, your career, and your one shot at redemption.
Knows: Only you and Merrill Collins. Possibly Claudia Knights suspects something.
Shouldn’t find out: Her brother—your partner—Mitchel Donaldson. If he ever learns the truth, it would destroy him. And you.
2. You were a member of Logan Ahern’s street gang.
Knows: Logan, of course. And Merrill.
Shouldn’t find out: The public. Your colleagues in the force. Especially Mitchel. Even Chief Neil Johnson likely doesn’t know the full extent. If it were revealed, it would jeopardize all you do in force.
3. You slept with Merrill Collins.
It connects you to the criminal underworld in a way that could compromise your integrity as a detective. And emotionally, it ties you to the woman responsible for a child’s death.
Knows: Merrill, and possibly Claudia Knights remembers.
Shouldn’t find out: The public. Your superiors. Ruby Conray—especially not her.
4. You handed over Alice Donaldson to Merrill without knowing why.
It’s not just that you kidnapped her—it’s that you didn’t ask why. You were so desperate to be “made a man,” you sacrificed a child. This isn’t a mistake. It’s a crime of apathy and ambition.
Knows: You. Merrill.
Shouldn’t find out: Mitchel Donaldson. Ruby. Anyone but priest, really.
5. You don’t believe in God, not really—not anymore.
Your conversations with Elliot Gregory are your last tether to something like hope. If even he thought you were truly lost, it might break that final thread.
Knows: Probably Elliot suspects.
Shouldn’t find out: society might refuse you as an atheist.
6. You would kill to protect Mitchel—even though you don’t believe in justice anymore.
It’s a paradox—you protect him out of guilt, but if he ever found out, it would ruin him. Your greatest act of penance must remain invisible.
Knows: Only you.
Shouldn’t find out: Mitchel Donaldson
1. Take down Logan Ahern
Every king’s time comes. Logan had his. Now it’s time for his fall. He made you. Taught you the rules of the street. But that doesn’t buy him a free pass. You see what he’s become. What he always was. He needs to go down. Not just for the city—but for you. You’ll never be free while he’s still breathing.
2. Put a bullet in Samuel Fidget
That kid’s a rabid dog. Cold eyes, twitchy hands, too quick with a blade. Logan at least had limits. Samuel? He’s got none. You’re not even sure he knows what mercy is.
He’s the next generation of rot, and you’ve got one shot to stop it. Kill him before he makes a name. Before the streets forget Logan and whisper his name instead.
3. Make Merrill Collins pay
You still remember that night with her—too clearly. And you’ll never forgive her for what she made you do. She wore your guilt like perfume and smiled while Alice Donaldson bled out in a river. You were a boy. She knew it. She used it. It’s time she answered for that. For all of it.
4. Keep Mitchell Donaldson alive
Your partner. The brother of the girl you doomed. He’s a damn idealist—believes in truth, justice, innocence. Like he didn’t grow up on the same streets.
You don’t like him. But you’ll die for him if you have to. You took one Donaldson life. You owe the world his.
5. Figure out what to do with Ruby Conray
She’s different. You don’t know why she gives a damn about you, but she does. And you… might actually love her. Should you marry her? Maybe not. Maybe yes.
6. Keep your secrets buried
You kidnapped Alice Donaldson. Gave her to a monster. You were in Logan’s gang. You slept with Merrill Collins.
Some things need to stay buried. If the public finds out, your badge is gone. If Mitchell finds out, you’re dead.
And if Ruby ever learns the truth… Well, who knows.Â
7. Protect Grace Shea and her family
She’s the only friend you’ve got. You saved her once, when she was young. She never forgot. You never touched her. Not like that. You were older. She was too young.
But somehow, you two stayed close. Now she’s married to Arnold, a good man. Got a little girl too. You’d burn the world down to keep them safe.
