Special:

  • Hazard player: Whenever you hear of a game of poker, you are tempted to play. Roll a die. If you don’t roll a 5 or 6, you must either play or lose 1 point of resistance. This compulsion ends once you overcome your alcoholism.

  • Alcoholic: For every shot you take, you gain 1 point of resistance. If you take 3 shots within 15 minutes, you pass out for 5 minutes. If you don’t take a shot every 30 minutes, you lose 1 point of resistance. If your resistance drops to 0 due to lack of alcohol intake, visit a doctor—and immediately after that, visit a major.

  • Christian: At least 3 times per game, go to confession.

  • Consoling: At least twice per game, visit a whore without having a sex with her. Ask for comfort, caresses, and sweet words.

  • Pot boy: Every hour, pay £1 to Arthur Higginbottom (as long as he will be working for you). Him working means he is at yours or yours family disposal.

  • Sickness: every hour, you need to take a pill from Bruno Turner (you start with none, so you have to buy them soon). If you won’t, you loose 1 point of resistence.

Knight of Kerry, Sir Waverly Scott (52), is one of the most prominent figures in Aetherwick. A wealthy aristocrat from an old family, he has a beautiful wife and an even more beautiful daughter. He is possibly a future member of Parliament. He has always been looking down on the less fortunate — those who do not share his blue blood — times might change.

Young Life

You were the youngest of three brothers in a family that traces its roots back to Henry VIII, to the House of Tudor. Your upbringing was very traditional — so much so that your closest companions were the maids. The eldest brother was destined to inherit the estate, while the second entered a convent. You, by default or design, ended up in the army. You made your name during the Napoleonic Wars, where you learned to fight, drink, and gamble. For your service, you were granted the title Knight of Kerry by the king, along with land and a modest fortune.

Marriage

At the age of 35, you married lady Isabella and increased your fortune even further. A year later, she gave birth to your beautiful daughter. You insisted on naming her Victoria, in honor of your military triumphs. But in many ways, she marked the last true success of your life.

Addictions

Accustomed to a flamboyant lifestyle, you squandered your fortune on alcohol and gambling. The family savings have all but vanished. As your debts mounted and remained unpaid, you were refused entry to Aetherwick’s most esteemed establishments. Your relationship with your wife began to unravel. You’ve even come to suspect she might be having an affair — though you have no idea with whom, or how. Yet how else to explain her coldness toward you? Every Thursday, you wife attends a tea party at lady Muriel Clubb. A bit suspicious, isn’t it?

Whoring

Estranged from your wife, you became a frequent visitor at the brothels run by Merrill Collins, a local crime lord. It’s not about sex, really — you take comfort in lying against a bare breast, fondling warm skin, and hearing sweet whispers about your past heroism. Merchant Hughie McMillian is often there as well.

The Clubbs

You met Early and Muriel Clubb by chance. Early, it turns out, was a childhood friend of your wife. At Isabella’s insistence, you agreed to visit them at their summer house. On the very first night, after both Early and Isabella had gone to bed, Muriel found you alone in the library. She didn’t speak a word — just kissed you, hard and passionately. You became an animal. Afterward, you were overwhelmed with shame and swore never to repeat it. Still, you dream of that single night with that woman. You remember little else from the trip — you kept yourself drunk for the rest of it, terrified that if you sobered up, you wouldn’t be able to resist her again. A paradox — most men drink to give themselves courage; you drank to hold yourself back.

Duel

One evening at the gentlemen’s club, too drunk to think, you caused a scene. You don’t recall much — only that doctor Alan Conrad insulted you, and you challenged him to a duel. It happened next day at sunrise, one of the few moments you were sober. You stabbed him through the heart. It was an accident. An instinct. He charged and you riposte. And he was dead. Dr. Bruno Turner was present and knows what you did. Later, you paid off Chief of Police Neil Johnson to ensure the investigation went no further.

Decaying health

Due to your excessive drinking, your health is decaying quickly. Lately, you are often in pain, and you are buying medicine from Bruno Turner to endure it.

Reminiscencing the old times

You often talked about the time in the army and what you did there, about your old successes, battles, and duels. The women you loved, the hazard games you played, the crazy stuns you did. You are a hero. How can they possibly forget that?

Broke

As you were gradually expelled from all the reputable clubs in the city, you began frequenting Logan Ahern’s den—the most illegal gambling house in Aetherwick. And you lost. During your last game, you lost almost everything. Witnesses included Sir Early Clubb, merchant Arthur Dart, and Bishop Columbus Ede.

You now owe £500, and desperation is taking hold. How could this happen — to you, Sir Waverly Scott, brought low? You dream of your grandfather’s days, when commoners were slaves to their betters. How you loathe these filthy profiteers of the merchant class!

Parliament

One of your few remaining hopes is to win a seat in Parliament. Elections are approaching. If you can gather enough support, your future — and your dignity — might yet be restored. Perhaps your wife would look at you with respect again.

Proposal

Bradley Harrington, who owns a local factory, has offered £2,000 to marry your daughter. And damn you — you’re considering it. But there are other paths. You could sell your land — worth perhaps £4,000 (but you would need to find a buyer).

You could even sell your title—it might fetch £1,000. But would you ever stoop so low? Would you sell your name? That name may be all you have left. It might still open the doors of Parliament. Perhaps that, more than money, is your last chance at redemption.

Lady Isabella (wife, 34)
You married her when she was just 17, captivated by her beauty. And you did love her — perhaps you still do. But your relationship has grown cold over the years. She never gave you a son, though to be fair, you became incapable of performance barely three years into the marriage. Your age? Or your lifestyle? To the public, she remains a dutiful wife. But in private, she scorns the addict and failure you’ve become. Still, your heart aches for her. Is there a way to win her back?

Lady Victoria (daughter, 16)
Beautiful, poised, and every bit a lady — on the outside. In truth, she’s a spoiled brat, and it takes restraint not to strike her when she disrespects you. Still, you love her. Fiercely. But she must learn to respect you. After all, she’s only a woman — and you are her father.

Logan Ahern (crime lord, 42)
Ruthless. Unpredictable. Dangerous. You owe him £500. If you don’t pay soon, who knows what might happen — to you, or your family.
You won’t allow that to happen. You can’t.

Neil Johnson (police captain, 45)
Captain Johnson has always treated his betters with polite deference — especially when they paid well. Corrupt to the bone, and possibly richer than you are now.
you paid him to remain silent about the death of doctor Alan Conray. You may ask him for support and protection again. But will he agree? Perhaps it’s time to remind him of your noble blood.

Bradley Harrington (merchant, 42)
A bothersome upstart. An arrogant nobody who thinks a title can be bought like linen. He runs a local factory and has offered £2,000 for your daughter’s hand.
And damn you — you may be forced to submit.

Early (33) and Muriel (34) Clubbs (aristocrats)
Earl was your wife’s childhood friend. Muriel is his elegant, intoxicating wife. You visit their summer estate on Isabella’s request. You let Muriel seduce you once. You promised yourself it would never happen again. And yet… some part of you still burns for her.

Arthur Higginbottom (17)
Your family porter. You pay him £1 per day. You barely notice him—he is little more than a servant, a shadow in your halls.

Doctor Bruno Turner (40)
You’re not close. But Dr. Turner was there when you killed Alan Conray in that duel. He knows what you did.

1. He is broke.

  • Knows: Early Clubb, Arthur Dart, Bishop Columbus Ede
  • Must not find out: The aristocracy, His wife (Lady Isabella), His daughter (Victoria), General public

2. He owes £500 to crime lord Logan Ahern due to gambling.

  • Knows: Logan Ahern
  • Must not find out: Anyone else, especially the upper class and his family

3. He frequents Merrill Collins’ brothel.

  • Knows: Merrill Collins (and probably her girls)
  • Must not find out: Lady Isabella, The public (reputation at stake)

4. He killed Alan Conray in a duel and bribed Police Captain Neil Johnson to cover it up.

  • Knows: Dr. Bruno Turner (witness), Captain Neil Johnson (bribed)
  • Must not find out: Ruby Conray (Alan’s daughter), The police (if Neil ever turns), The public (especially political opponents)

5. He slept with Lady Muriel Clubb.

  • Knows: Lady Muriel
  • Must not find out: Lady Isabella (his wife), Early Clubb (Muriel’s husband), Victoria (daughter)

6. He is impotent.

  • Knows: Likely only himself and possibly Lady Isabella, or prostitutes he visited
  • Must not find out: Anyone else at all—especially not the public or political rivals

7. Your health is decaying

  • Knows: Bruno Turner and you
  • Must not find out: you don’t want your family or actually anyone to know as it would hurt your pride

1. Secure Money—Fast
No one can take your status, but you can’t eat the name, only food. You need to get your hands on fortune, but quickly. Maybe through hazard… or through other means.

2. Win Back Your Wife’s Love
You still love Isabella. Fiercely. But her eyes are cold, her touch absent.
Maybe you need to impress her somehow? Show her you are still the mighty warrior you used to be? Or do you need to charm her—romance her as you did in youth? Who knows.
Maybe… maybe you
should get rid of your addictions.
Plus… what is with this tea party they are having every Thursday with lady Muriel Clubb?

3. Get Rid of Logan Ahern
Ahern owns your debt — and therefore, owns you. That cannot stand.
Pay him back — somehow. Or get him arrested — perhaps with help from his rivals. Or kill him — quietly, cleanly, and permanently. Who are his enemies? He has to have some.

4. Get Elected to Parliament
Power. Prestige. Pay. A seat in Parliament could restore your name, your wealth, and your dignity.
But for that, you need to campaign, you need to get support of the mayor, other aristocrats, and all the men in Aetherwick.

5. Find a Cure for Your Impotence
You were once a lion in war and in bed. Now… less than a man. You must seek a doctor — perhaps one discreet and well-paid. Or try folk cures, potions, rumors from foreign lands. Or regain your strength and self-respect — perhaps the cure is more in the mind than the body?

6. Muriel Clubb—A Dangerous Flame
One night. One kiss. One sin. And it haunts you. Muriel awakened something in you that no other woman has, and you wish to experience it again, eve though you feel guilty about it.

7. Get a hold of your health
You are annoyed of your sickness. You wish to be young and strong again. And healthy.
