Doctor Ruby Conray opened her office in the poorest part of the city. It is said she will accept anyone — even criminals. And even though she often doesn’t get paid, she’s staying.
Her betters are giving her one month before she loses all her money — and, subsequently, her life. Her reputation? She’s already lost that.

Early Life

Even though you came from a wealthy family, you always had a soft spot for those less fortunate. Your father was a loving man—a doctor himself—who gave you a good education. One day, he came home furious. He had an argument at the club and announced he was going to settle it the old-school way. You didn’t know what that meant.

The next day, he was found dead behind the city gates, stabbed in the heart. The police found nothing. But later, a hefty sum of money appeared in your account. You convinced your mother to use the money to send you to university in America.

Failed Studies

It wasn’t an easy time, but you studied hard, dreaming of becoming a doctor like your father. Sadly, even in America, women had it tough. One professor proposed marriage—you refused. You didn’t want to become another housewife. So he failed you. He made sure you never graduated.

Still, you had the skills. When you came across a gunfight, you managed to perform improvised surgery while bullets flew around you. That’s when you realized: no matter what anyone says, you’ve got what it takes.

Return Home

Eventually, you received a telegram—your mother had died. You returned to Aetherwick to handle the family estate. There wasn’t much left. Your mother hadn’t fared well after losing her husband and daughter. She didn’t work, and slowly spent almost everything you had.

You were lost. At one point, you even considered becoming a prostitute in Merrill Collins’ brothels. Instead, you asked Merrill to forge a diploma for you—and she did.

You sold your apartment, used the money to open an office, and started accepting clients. But no one came. No matter how many ads you placed in the newspapers or how sick people were, nobody wanted a female doctor.

The Slow Beginnings

What helped was a lucky accident. A group of badly injured thugs passed by and, seeing your doctor’s sign, stepped in. At first, they complained when they saw you were a woman. But you gave them a simple choice: take what you have, or let your friend die. They let you treat him, and you saved his life. They even paid you.

The next day, their boss—Logan Ahern—visited you personally. He thanked you and gave you a bonus for saving his men. Soon after, people started knocking on your door. But who were they? Usually, the poorest of the poor—people who couldn’t pay. Still, you treated them. No one should be left alone in their misery, and you still considered yourself luckier than most.

Logan’s boys became regular visitors, and at least they paid well. But one of them—Samuel Fidget—always watches you like he’d like to cut you open while you’re stitching him up. He makes you nervous, and you’re a tough surgeon who operated with gunfire all around. They say he’s a killer, heartless. You believe it. He feels dangerous.

Rivalry

You eventually met your main competitor: Doctor Bruno Turner. He greeted you coldly, disinterested.

“Do you mind that I’m a woman?” you asked.

“I couldn’t care less if you’re a woman, a man, or a dog,” he said. “I’ve seen your work. You’re an amateur. Please, leave.”

Despite that, he occasionally sends you patients—ones who can’t pay. He refuses to treat them. You don’t.

Altruism & Research

Sometimes, it feels like you’re the only one who cares about the poor. But thankfully, there’s also Elliot Gregory, a local priest who does what he can to help.

It was in his church where you have met a charming policemen, Liam Conolly, who started to court you. He’s nice, but you’re not really into him. You mostly see him as a way to learn more about your father’s death.

Unexpected Love

As a single woman running a business, you naturally attracted another: Linda Richey, a journalist from America who started her own newspaper—and a “knitting class” that’s really a cover for a feminist club. You joined her eagerly, drawn to her ideals of equality—both real and legal. To your surprise, you’re also attracted to her. You’ve never felt this before, but as a scientist, you’re not about to ignore the signs.

The Knitting Club

Others are in the group too:

  • Claudia Knight, a tough girl from the streets, full of resolve and inner strength.

  • Victoria Scott, a very young woman living under her despotic father. A true free-thinker, if a little naïve. That could also be said about you.

Other Friends

You’ve made friends among the poor.

Grace Shea has a little daughter; you tend to their health regularly. They’re malnourished—money and food are tight. Her husband, Arnold Shea, does what he can, but times are harsh. Worse still, his employer, Bradley Harrington, is about to automate his factory. Arnold will be out of a job soon.

Then there’s Arthur Higginbottom—a sweet boy with a big head who often asks you for advice on how to treat women. He’s kind of cute, and though some of his questions are inappropriate, his intentions are good—he wants to please women. So, you taught him what you could. When it became difficult to explain things without a proper demonstration… you showed him on yourself. That wasn’t a good idea. Things got out of hand, and you ended up sleeping together. It was a sweet experience, one you agreed never to repeat.

Later, he confessed that all his efforts were because he wants to be a good partner to Victoria Scott. You warned him it could never work—but he prefers to keep his head in the clouds, and you can’t blame him. You didn’t tell him you know Victoria. You felt a pang of guilt—you slept with her boy. But you didn’t know about their connection at the time.

Merrill Collins (Crime Lord, 42)
She runs a prostitution business and helped you forge a doctor’s diploma. However, she refuses to send her girls to you, as she doesn’t trust your medical skills. You tried to explain your background, but she didn’t seem to believe you.

Logan Ahern (Crime Lord, 42)
You’re not thrilled about treating criminals, but they are humans just like everyone else — and they’re among the few who actually pay for your services.

Samuel Fidget (Logan’s Enforcer, 22)
He terrifies you. He watches you like he’s imagining how your insides work while you’re sewing up his wounds. He has a reputation as a killer and a heartless man, and you believe it.

Bruno Turner (Doctor, 40)
He insulted you by calling your work “amateur.” You’re determined to prove that a woman doctor can be just as skilled — if not more — than any man. You loathe his arrogance but grudgingly respect his skill. Strangely, he sends you patients, even though only those who can’t pay.

Elliot Gregory (Priest, 35)
You attend his mass and occasionally go to confession. He’s one of the few who shares your passion for helping the poor. You trust him deeply, though you sometimes question if having a faith is enough. Deeds speaks louder than words.

Liam Conolly (Detective, 30)
You’re seeing him casually. You like him and enjoy spending time together — but you don’t love him. Your real interest is what he knows about your father’s death. Since you suspect the police covered something up, he might be your way into those hidden files.

Linda Richey (Journalist, 25)
You admire her ideals and strength — and you have a quiet but growing crush on her. You’re unsure what to do about it. She’s passionate, driven, and offers you both companionship and a vision for a better future.

Claudia Knight (22)
An impressive young woman from the streets. A natural leader, brave and sharp. She is also attractive young women, as you have noticed.

Victoria Scott (16)
A very young woman with a free spirit, despite being raised by a despotic father. You see in her a version of yourself — had you not had an enlightened father and a tragedy to harden you. You feel protective of her, especially knowing Arthur’s feelings. And you feel guilty, because you slept with her boy (even though you didn’t know about their relationship).

Grace Shea (20)
One of your most regular patients. A kind young mother with a two-year-old daughter. They never have money, but you treat them anyway.

Arnold Shea (25)
Grace’s husband. A hardworking man with a natural charisma. If anyone were to lead a revolution, it might be him. He has the fire — and the respect of those around him. You have never met him, but you have heard about him from his wife, and you are eager to meeti him in person.

Arthur Higginbottom (17)
A curious boy who first came to you with minor wounds and inappropriate questions about women. You answered. Then you demonstrated. Then things went too far — and you slept together. He’s sweet, well-meaning, and very young. You feel more like a mother to him now than a lover. He confessed his affections for Victoria Scott. You warned him it can’t work — but you haven’t told him that you know her. You carry guilt for what happened, but also a strange fondness.

1. You’re dating Liam Conolly mainly to find out what happened to your father.
You’re emotionally detached from the relationship, which adds a layer of manipulation you’re not proud of.

  • Knows: You.
  • Shouldn’t find out: Liam Conolly — it would hurt him, and ruin your access to police information.

2. You have a crush on Linda Richey.
You’re unsure whether it’s love or idealistic admiration, but you’re afraid of the social consequences either way.

  • Knows: You. Possibly Linda suspects, but it’s unspoken.
  • Shouldn’t find out: The public — because same-sex attraction is considered immoral or scandalous in your society.

3. You’re treating criminals.
You’re risking your reputation among respectable citizens. It would only take one rumor to destroy you.

  • Knows: Logan Ahern and his gang, especially Samuel Fidget.
  • Shouldn’t find out: Law enforcement — you could be arrested or investigated.

4. Your doctor’s diploma is forged.
Even your allies like Linda or Elliot don’t know — their disappointment would crush you.

  • Knows: Merrill Collins (who helped you forge it), and you.
  • Shouldn’t find out: The public — they’d stop trusting you. The law — you’d face criminal charges and possible imprisonment.

5. You slept with Arthur Higginbottom.
You carry guilt. You view it as a mistake, though a sweet one — and you’re determined not to repeat it.

  • Knows: You and Arthur.
  • Shouldn’t find out: Victoria Scott — she has feelings for Arthur, and she’s young and idealistic.

6. You’re a member of the feminist club.
You’re preparing to reveal it eventually, but fear backlash or violence. In the current climate, it’s seen as radical or even treasonous, and mostly, illegal.

  • Knows: Fellow members (Linda Richey, Claudia Knight, Victoria Scott).
  • Shouldn’t find out: The public and the law — at least not yet.

7. You considered prostitution at your lowest point.
You still carry shame from that moment of desperation.

  • Knows: you
  • Shouldn’t find out: Public or allies — it would tarnish your image as a principled doctor.

1. Solve your financial problems
You’re not poor yet, but with the constant costs of medicine, equipment, and unpaid patients, you could easily go bankrupt. And then you’d be in real trouble. You need to find a way to attract wealthier clientele — Victoria Scott might be helpful here, considering her social position. Financial stability would allow you to continue treating the poor without risking your own survival.

2. Prove to Dr. Bruno Turner that you are a good doctor
You hate how condescending he is. He looks down on you not only as a woman but also as someone he sees as an amateur. You want to prove you’re just as good — if not better — than any man. Gaining his respect (or surpassing him) would legitimize your work in the eyes of society and potential patients.

3. Push feminist ideals into the government
Elections are approaching, and even though women don’t have voting right, technically, they could be elected. It’s time to put that to the test. Make sure a supporter of feminist ideals gets a seat in parliament. For the sake of equality, progress, and future generations. Systemic change is needed to protect women’s rights, and legal reform is the only way to make it last.

4. Get a seat in parliament yourself
Why not you? Someone has to be elected — and it might as well be someone educated, principled, and from a good family. You. A seat in government would bring you security, influence, and most importantly, prove to everyone that you’re not just a doctor, but a leader. It would also help you to shape policy — healthcare, gender equality, and labor reform are causes close to your heart.

5. Find your father’s killer
You want to know what really happened to your father. You’re certain the police are covering for someone powerful — and you won’t stop until you uncover the truth.
Additional motivation: It’s not just about justice — it’s about closure, legacy, and making peace with your past.

6. Help the poor
Their situation is dreadful. You want to provide medical care, but also be their advocate — supporting their cause, giving them a voice, and protecting them from exploitation.
