Elliot Gregory (35) is a good Aetherwick priest. But the city is drowning in poverty, pain, and silence. So many broken souls, so much need for comfort — and yet neither the politicians nor the Church seem to give a damn. But someone has to. Someone has to try. So he does. Quietly, stubbornly, one person at a time.
Background
Coming from a very religious, upper-middle-class family, you considered yourself lucky that your parents had enough money to send you to the seminary. Life there was harsh—nothing like you had imagined. Some priests were molesting little boys. Fortunately, you were never considered attractive enough to be targeted. Still, it was your first encounter with a grim truth: the Holy Church is not as holy as it pretends to be.
Sins of the Church
At the age of 20, as you prepared to return to Aetherwick, you crossed paths with Arthur Dart, the son of a wealthy merchant. He had been sent to the monastery to be kept out of the way and turned out to be one of the most evil and decadent young men you had ever encountered. In contrast to you, he was handsome and popular among the priests. They often invited him for private lessons. One of them was Columbus Ede, who is now the Bishop of Aetherwick.
Sins of Man
Soon after your return to Aetherwick, the body of a seven-year-old girl—Alice Donaldson—was found floating in the river. She had been raped multiple times. That same evening, a fifteen-year-old boy came to your church. His name was Liam Conolly. He confessed that he wanted to sleep with a prostitute who had asked him to bring her a young girl. Without thinking about the consequences, he abducted Alice and brought her to the woman. He never imagined she would end up dead. “How can I ever atone for it?” he asked. You urged him to become a policeman—and he did. It is a sad story, because one of your parishioners is a brother of that girl – Mitchell Donaldson.
Sins of Criminals
Life in Aetherwick isn’t easy. There are the rich, and there are the poor. The poor work miserable jobs that only serve to make the rich even richer. If they fall sick, they have no money for doctors, they lose their jobs, and they die. Most girls turn to prostitution, the easiest way to make some money, though many of them become pregnant in the process.
Crime lords take advantage of the situation to grow rich from others’ misfortunes. Yet, unlike merchants or nobility, they are at least accessible to the poor. In a way, they are one of them.
There is Merrill Collins (42), an ex-prostitute who now controls the business, and her right hand, Claudia Knight (22), who is like a daughter to her. In the past, when Merrill still believed in God, she confessed to you who the girl really was: the daughter of Hughie McMillan (55), a Scottish merchant. His wife ran away to the USA. Because she felt she couldn’t take the little girl with her, so Merrill took care of her. You often wondered why, since Merrill was never known for being soft-hearted… But when you saw how often she spoke of Hughie, you began to suspect that perhaps there was some spark of love in her heart.
You tried to raise Claudia to be a good child of God, but she ended up being more of a good child of her mother. She seems to have a heart, yet she will commit any evil deed she is asked to.
Another crime lord is Logan Ahern (42), who controls the gambling business. He doesn’t do a bad job, as he makes it expensive for the rich and accessible for the poor. But in the end, he still supports vices that make the poor even poorer. If someone cannot pay, he sends his silent enforcer, Samuel Fitget (22). Many poor souls have met their deaths this way.
Sins of the devil
The thing is, Samuel is deeply religious. He comes to you to confess every one of his murders. You refuse to grant him absolution, but he keeps coming anyway. It seems as though he takes some twisted joy in your suffering as he recounts all the horrendous things he’s done.
He admitted, as a kid, he killed a priest, and Grace Shea‘s parents, and many street urchins, and many people who crossed his path. He admitted he orchestrated the death or Arthur Dart‘s family, and a sickness of Hughie McMillian.
Sins of a society
The older you grow, the more you feel that real help must be offered to people. A way to eliminate the criminals who are extorting them. A way to stop the rich from abusing them. A way to create laws to protect them.
Sins of the Police
There is so much more you have learned as a priest. Chief of Police Neil Johnson (45) came to you once, incognito, but he is hard to hide. He’s confessed many things. He told you he knows who killed Ruby Conray’s (30) father, but he won’t reveal it because the murderer is a powerful man who could destroy him. He also knows who killed Alice Donaldson, but can’t say, as it involves a whole group of powerful people who would have his head. He admitted to taking bribes but also said he always gave part of it to good causes. He also confessed that his soul is burdened… and he is contemplating surrendering himself to justice. That’s why he sent his wife and daughter away to a house in Spain he bought with his dirty money.
Speaking of Ruby, she is a female doctor doing her best to treat the poor in Aetherwick. After her father’s death, she went to the USA, earned her medical degree, and came back. You became friends because both of you are doing your best to be helpful to those in need.
Sins of the Priest
You face a big dilemma. You know so many secrets about so many people, but your vows prevent you from bringing them to justice. At the same time, you’re starting to question whether spreading the word of God is enough. You believe in the importance of forgiveness and kindness, but you also feel that something must be done.
Take Arthur Shea and his family as an example. He has a young wife and a small daughter. He works day and night to earn enough money to feed them, and now he’s in danger of losing his job because merchant Bradley Harrington wants to bring machines to his factory. Shouldn’t there be some protection for the working class?
You are also uncertain about the role of women in society. The Bible clearly states that a woman should listen to her husband, but does that really mean a woman is as insignificant as a possession? It seems unnecessarily cruel.
Sins of the Future
You know all the policemen. Detective Liam Conolly (30) still comes to you for regular confession, even though he doesn’t believe in God anymore. You continue to pray for him, as he refuses to say his number of Lord’s prayers. Detective Mitchell Donaldson (25) also comes to you. He is very friendly and protective of others.
You’re unsure what to do. You could push Liam to confess to Mitchell. You could push them both to see how they can take down Captain Neil Johnson. You could encourage Neil Johnson to confess his sins and expose the people he’s been protecting all this time. But you also want them to eliminate the danger posed by the crime lords… even though you’re not sure if crime is something that can be completely uprooted. If these figures are taken down, others will simply take their place.
Sins of Unknown Origin
To make matters even more complicated, a new priest has recently arrived in Aetherwick—Silas Davis (25), sent directly from the Vatican. You have no clue what his business here is.
Columbus Ede (bishop, 45)
He’s your superior, so you try to stay respectful. But you know he’s not as holy as he pretends to be. There’s darkness beneath that cassock, but he’s powerful — far more than you — and you have no proof. Just unease… and prayers he doesn’t drag others down with him.
Arthur Dart (merchant, 30)
You never liked that boy. But deep down, you pity him. He was abused from a young age, and you fear it twisted him into something broken. Maybe even perverse.
Liam Conolly (detective, 30)
He did something terrible. But he was just a kid. Now, he’s trying — in his own flawed, violent way. You like him. You pray for him. Yet you fear his sickness is catching… that you’re starting to lose your own faith. You wonder if you should push him to confess to Mitchell Donaldson. Maybe that would free them both.
Merrill Collins (crime lord, 42)
She is what this broken world does to a woman who refuses to be crushed. She fought to survive — and became something worse than the cruelty she was born into. You fear her soul is lost… damned. But still, you pray.
Claudia Knight (22)
Merrill’s adopted daughter — and in danger of becoming just like her. She’s soaked in sin, but those sins aren’t hers. They’re her mother’s. You still believe she can be saved. Somehow. But maybe first… the mother must be taken out of the way.
Hughie McMillan (merchant, 55)
You don’t know him well. He rose from nothing, built his life through hard work and strict faith. But he worships at Columbus Ede’s altar…
Logan Ahern (crime lord, 42)
Worse than Merrill. A devil in human skin. You’ve seen evil — but with him, it walks upright and smiles.
Samuel Fidget (22)
Logan’s right hand. He comes to confess, spilling filth like he’s bleeding from the soul. But you won’t give him absolution. He’s not ready. Something’s off in him. His eyes are too empty for someone so young.
Neil Johnson (chief of police, 45)
A man haunted by guilt. You’re not sure what he did, but it’s heavy. And strange — why doesn’t he goes to Bishop Ede for confession, even though they move in the same circles? Maybe he knows something. Maybe he fears being exposed. You think of pushing him… to speak. To confess. To cleanse.
Arnold Shea (25)
A poor, honest man doing everything to protect his wife and child. A real soul of the community.
Ruby Conray (doctor, 30)
She’s a friend. A fellow fighter for the poor. You respect her. Maybe even envy her courage. Sometimes you wonder… should you tell her that Neil Johnson might know what happened to her father? Would that help her — or destroy her?
Mitchell Donaldson (detective, 25)
A good man. The kind the city chews up. He wants to protect the weak — you admire that. But more than anything, you want him to bring down the crime lords. And maybe… maybe even take down the chief.
1. Bishop Columbus Ede slept with Arthur Dart.
If this got out, it could destroy both Ede’s standing in the Church and Dart’s could end up in the prison.
- Knows: You, Bishop Columbes Ede, Arthur Dart.
- Shouldn’t find out: The public, the Church authorities, and Arthur’s business rivals, police.
2. Liam Conolly kidnapped Alice Donaldson as a child.
Liam was just a kid then, probably coerced or used. But the crime led to Alice’s death. If Mitchell finds out, it will break him — or unleash him.
- Knows: You, Liam Conolly
- Shouldn’t find out: Mitchell Donaldson, public, police.
3. Neil Johnson, Chief of Police, is corrupt.
He’s been taking bribes, maybe even manipulating investigations. His wealth is not from his salary.
- Knows: You, Neil Johnson
- Shouldn’t find out: The public, police, Ruby Conray.
4. Wife of Hughie McMillian run away from him due to his despotic character.
You know she left her daughter with Merrill Collins.
- Knows: You. Merrill Collins. Neil Johnson.
- Shouldn’t find out: Hughie McMilliam, journalists, public
5. Neil Johnson knows who killed Ruby Conray’s father, Alan Conray.
- Knows: You. Neil Johnson.
- Shouldn’t find out: Ruby Conray, public, police
6. Neil Johnson helped cover up the death of Alice Donaldson.
- Knows: You. Neil Johnson.
- Shouldn’t find out: Mitchell Donaldson, police, public
7. Neil Johnson sent his wife and daughter abroad for protection.
He’s scared. That means he knows something even worse than he’s let on.
- Knows: You, Neil Johnson
- Shouldn’t find out: Public, police
8. Samuel Fidget’s crims
Samuel admitted many crimes (each one of them can be seen as individual secret):
- He killed parents of Grace Shea
- He killed many street urchins
- He killed many people who crossed his path
- He orchestrated death of Arthur Dart’s family
- He caused (somehow) Hughie McMillian’s sickness
- Knows: You, Samuel Fidget, possibly someone else
- Shouldn’t find out: Public, police
1. Get Logan Ahern arrested
He is a devil in human skin. His operations spread poison through the city. He must be stopped — for the sake of Aetherwick’s soul.
2. Get Samuel Fidget arrested
He’s young, ambitious, and even more unstable than Logan. He confesses, but never repents. If he takes over, things will get even worse.
3. Solve issue of Merrill Collins
You’re torn. She’s ruthless — a crime boss entangled in drugs and kidnapping. But she’s also providing protection to many working girls who have no one else. You wonder: is there a better way?
4. Right what was wronged
The city is soaked in old blood. The murder of Ruby Conray’s father. The death of Alice Donaldson. You don’t believe divine justice will come. That means it’s up to people like you to make it happen.
5. Help the poor
Men like Arnold Shea are the backbone of the community. You want to be a source of real support — not just words from the pulpit. Find ways to stand by them before they’re swallowed by the machine.
6. Save Claudia Knight
She’s Merrill’s adopted daughter, walking a fine line between redemption and corruption. You fear she’s being shaped into her mother’s successor — but perhaps, with guidance, she could still change course.
7. Support Liam Conolly
He was a child when he did it. He’s broken by it. Maybe confession could be the beginning of his healing — or his destruction. Either way, truth must come out eventually.
8. Support Neil Johnson
The chief of police carries guilt like a stone around his neck. You suspect his hands are stained with more than just bribes.
9. Warn Ruby Conray
She’s a good soul, maybe the only one trying to heal rather than punish. She deserves to know the truth about her father’s death — but when, and how? You cannot break the confession secret, but maybe you could push her somehow in the right direction?
